Sweet Chick, Lower East Side
I’ve been dying to check this place out since I graduated and came home to New York and finally got the chance since I was off last Sunday. This restaurant gained lots of attention and press since it opened in early 2013 and was an instant-classic among New York’s hip-hop community such as Raekwon, Slick Rick, and my idol, Vashtie.
Sweet Chick first got my attention earlier this year once I came across a video of Joey Bada$$ cheffing it up at their location in Brooklyn in a feature from Complex’s “First We Feast.” What made me really want to try it was coming across an article in June that said Nas planned on teaming up with the restaurant to expand nationally. They’re working on various spots along the east coast, such as Philadelphia, Boston and Atlanta, and Nas’ hometown, Queens. The last thing I wanted to do was let Nas down, so I checked it out for myself.
This place is known for their chicken and waffles, so attending brunch seemed like a perfect opportunity for the full experience.
We split 2 sides between each other because we wanted to try as much as we could eat. We shared the Carolina Cheese Grits and Home Fries. The home fries were perfectly seasoned with peppers and onions and they tasted like a little piece of heaven paired with the cheesy, creamy goodness, known as the cheese grits.
I was swaying with happiness over my food while swaying to classic R&B/Soul and Funk from artists like, Marvin Gaye to Chaka Kahn, in the background. I had so much fun, and so did my mouth, pause. Great food, great vibes. I can’t WAIT to go again and try more!
